1. HOMESTEADING FOR HEALTHY MEALS

Planting foods such as vegetables is a mandatory practice of the Amish. This saved them from having to leave the comfort of their homes to purchase from the market. This keeps the family busy, tending to the garden daily.

One way you can do the same is by planting in pots, tires, and drums. Apartment gardening is becoming very popular. Think about growing some tomatoes, 🥔 potatoes, and peppers in a few containers. You will be the proudest homesteader in town.

2. THE ART OF BAKING DELICIOUS PASTRIES

The Amish women are the home keepers while the men are the breadwinners who both enjoy their jobs to the fullest. In the Amish community, the men are the main providers while the women focus on the home.

This means creating delicious meals daily, three times per day, baking tasty pastries like bread buns, and cakes for the entire family.

The family dinner is very important as it is cooked from scratch and from foods coming straight from the farm. Try making more home meals, it’s healthier, cheaper, and allows family time.

3. GET CREATIVE AND MAKE IT YOURSELF

Creativity is the middle name of every Amish female. These women while doing household chores like cleaning and washing have also learned the art of making their own nontoxic household cleaners. One of such is HOMEMADE LAUNDRY DETERGENT.

They would take the entire day making g this cleaner that they stored for future usage. This could last for up to three months. Here is how you can make your laundry detergent.

Pour 2 cups Borax in a container then grate 2 bars of Zote laundry bar, combined with the Borax, shake vigorously. Use as your homemade laundry detergent on laundry day.

4. AMISH SIMPLE LAUNDRY TRICKS

Above we looked at how the Amish women made their laundry detergent but there is another unique thing about laundry day.

The Amish relied upon the sun’s heat and electrical energy as they believe that electricity offers the temptations of worldly pleasures so pans and outdoor clotheslines are used as a substitute. You can find more on how to clean like the Amish in the recommended book below.

The pans are used to wash and rinse by hand while the clothes are hung on the clothesline to be dried. This helps with the smell and the longevity of the clothes.

Works well for whites. A clothesline is something you may want to think about installing. Did I mention it prevents shrinking and prevent lint?

5. LITTLE SKILLS COST NOTHING

Being an Amish means learning to make something. This something could be taking nothing and making it into a masterpiece.

Bed linens, tablecloths, clothes, furniture, and headcovers are just to name a few of the items the Amish learn to make on their own.

This gives their home that natural homely feeling. As the winter approaches, knitted sweaters and blankets are some crafty home skills you could think about doing.

6. SHARING AND CARING

Unity is highly practiced and recommended in the Amish community. Most pictures shown of the Amish showed TOGETHERNESS.

They are always planning activities together, selling together, and talking with each other. Not only do they have strong communication skills but they SHARE whatever they have in excess with others in their community.

They find no problem in giving books, clothes, or food to neighbors. Doing so has created for the Amish a strong community. These are things we could practice in our neighborhoods.

Pay a friendly visit to the neighbor or take along a tasty treat to work or church. How about giving away something that you do not need. These are good practices to acquire and are sure to build friendships.

7. FOOD STORAGE FOR DAILY MEALS

The Amish have found great pleasure in storing almost every food source. From vegetables to steak, these are all mason jars worthy of storage.

In the Amish household, you would not find a refrigerator. Food items are preserved in mason jars and placed in a special pantry.

This adds more nutrients and taste to the food. When traveling the Amish would take jars with them from the pantry. This would be there on the go food source. For us, we would look for the nearest fast food stop.

That’s quite the opposite of the Amish. It had always dragged my interest when I see jars with stored food. I want to know how exactly it is done. It seems to be exciting and healthy.

8. PLAN YOUR DAYS AHEAD OF TIME

The Amish are keen on organizing their day ahead of time sometimes even weeks ahead. They have set rules that are called ordinances. This helps them to keep a steady daily life.

The day is planned out carefully regulated from the thing to do in the morning to the last thing to do before bed. If you must agree this practice of the Amish will help you to have a more focused day.

As long as you stick to it, your day will go as planned, and you will make minimal mistakes and get more done.

9.NO DEVICE DAY WITH THE FAMILY

One most followed rule of the Amish is the restriction of communication devices in the home. Devices like cell phones, TV, and radios are considered to be distracting.

In our modern society, it’s hard to walk away from these things as they play a very important role in the way we live our lives.

By the way, a no-device day doesn’t seem all that horrible. Take a day to spend time with your family, pets, and friends without the interruption of devices.

It builds close relationships and communications with those who need your attention the most. I promise you won’t regret doing it.

10. DIY FURNITURE COST LESS

The Amish homes are decorated with beautiful homemade furniture. These are wooden furniture made from scratch by the men in the family.

Making your own can be very exciting. I met a young couple who bought their equipment and made their beds, dining set, computer tables, and nightstands. These made them so proud and their home is looking very outstanding from the rest.

You may not be a pro at building furniture but I believe you can create and design your own. It doesn’t have to be a work of art. Social media is a good source for learning a skill.

11. FULL NIGHTS REST

The Amish don’t use alarm clocks to get them started in the mornings. They believe that a full night’s rest will get you up and running in the mornings without any extra help.

Going to bed before the next day sets in will allow the brain and body to get enough rest to function effectively the next day. This is a good practice to do every night.

12. PREP YOUR MEALS

Prepping your meals for the next day will not only get things up and running faster. This habit will contribute to your health and becoming more organized.

Before turning in at night layout what you will be preparing in the morning for breakfast. When you get out of bed you will know exactly what your next move will be.

13. TIME OUT

Time out is a time you take for yourself to meditate and reflect. You don’t have to be spiritual to do this. This habit is a good way to relax the mind and destress.

Distressing the mind will make you face situations calmly. Taking a walk in the park or just sitting by yourself with your eyes closed for a few minutes is a good way to start.

14. CREATE A FLOWER GARDEN

Amish women not only clean the home and make it beautiful. They actually enjoy planting flowers. Flowers are great, they set the atmosphere in your home.

Having a garden to tend to is a good habit for anyone to start. It comes with a lot of benefits that will beautify your home and your life.

15. BE YOURSELF

Amish are a group that dared to be themselves. Their lifestyle is opposite to that of ours. This makes them different yet comfortable with who they are.

A good habit is to love yourself. Design your surroundings the way you like them. Dress the way that makes you comfortable. Take yourself away from those who contradict. As long as it is healthy then you should live it as the Amish do.

A SIMPLE WAY OF LIFE

These Amish practices are not quite out of the ordinary. Most of them are similar to our lifestyle while some are not. Taking a page from the Amish book will change your life in a positive way you can never imagine. We hope that these tips were helpful. See you soon.
