THE AMISH LIFESTYLE

There are so many interesting stories about the Amish. Their way of life is one that is worth imitating. Amish practices can make life much simpler and less stressful in our modern society.

They believe in an organized living that allows them to be self-reliant with food, clothes, furniture, and transportation. If their lifestyle interest you then these 10 Amish practices will pique your interest even more.

BUGGY/ TRANSPORTATION

1.HOMESTEADING FOR HEALTHY MEALS

Planting foods such as vegetables is a mandatory practice of the Amish. This saved them from having to leave the comfort of their homes to purchase from the market. This keeps the family busy, tending to the garden daily.

One way you can do the same is planting in pots, tires, and drums. Apartment gardening is becoming very popular. Think about growing some tomatoes, 🥔 potatoes, and peppers in a few containers. You will be the proudest homesteader in town.

2.THE ART OF BAKING DELICIOUS PASTRIES

The Amish women are the home keepers while the men are the breadwinners who both enjoy their jobs to the fullest. In the Amish community, the men are the main providers while the women focus on the home.

This means creating delicious meals daily, three times per day, baking tasty pastries like bread buns, and cakes for the entire family.

The family dinner is very important as it is cooked from scratched and from foods coming straight from the farm. Try making more home meals, it’s healthier, cheaper, and allows family time.

3.GET CREATIVE AND MAKE IT YOURSELF

Creativity is the middle name of every Amish female. These women while doing household chores like cleaning and washing has also learned the art of making there own nontoxic household cleaners. One of such is HOMEMADE LAUNDRY DETERGENT.

They would take the entire day making g this cleaner that they stored for future usage. This could last for up to three months. Here is how you can make your laundry detergent.

Pour 2 cups Borax in a container then grate 2 bars of Zote laundry bar, combined with the Borax, shake vigorously. Use as your homemade laundry detergent on laundry day.

4.AMISH SIMPLE LAUNDRY TRICKS

Above we looked at how the Amish women made their laundry detergent but there is another unique thing about laundry day.

The Amish relied upon the sun’s heat and electrical energy as they believe that electricity offers the temptations of worldly pleasures so pans and outdoor clotheslines are used as a substitute.

The pans are used to wash and rinse by hand while the clothes are hung on the clothesline to be dried. This helps with the smell and the longevity of the clothes.

Works well for whites. A clothesline is something you may want to think about installing. Did I mention it prevents shrinking and prevent lint?

5.LITTLE SKILLS COST NOTHING

Being an Amish means learning to make something. This something could be taking nothing and making it into a masterpiece.

Bed linens, tablecloths, clothes, furniture, headcovers are just to name a few of the items the Amish learn to make on their own.

This gives their home that natural homely feeling. As the winter approaches, knitted sweater and blankets are some crafty home skills you could think about doing.

6.SHARING AND CARING

Unity is highly practice and recommended in the Amish community. Most pictures shown of the Amish showed TOGETHERNESS.

They are always planning activities together, selling together, and talking with each other. Not only do they have strong communication skills but they SHARE whatever they have in excess with others in their community.

They find no problem in giving books, clothes, or food to neighbors. Doing so has created for the Amish a strong community. These are things we could practice in our neighborhoods.

Pay a friendly visit to the neighbor or take along a tasty treat to work or church. How about giving away something that you do not need. These are good practices to acquire and is sure to build friendships.

7.FOOD STORAGE FOR DAILY MEALS

The Amish have found great pleasure in storing almost every food source. From vegetable to steak, these are all mason jar worthy for storage.

In the Amish household, you would not find a refrigerator. Food items are preserved in mason jars and place in a special pantry.

This adds more nutrients and taste to the food. When traveling the Amish would take jars with them from the pantry. This would be there on the go food source. For us, we would look for the nearest fast food stop.

That’s quite the opposite of the Amish. It had always dragged my interest when I see jars with stored food. I want to know how exactly it is done. It seems to be exciting and healthy.

8.PLAN YOUR DAYS AHEAD OF TIME

The Amish are keen on organizing their day ahead of time sometimes even weeks ahead. They have set rules that are called the ordinance. This helps them to keep a steady daily life.

The day is planned out carefully regulated from the thing to do in the morning to the last thing to do before bed. If you must agree this practice of the Amish will help you to have a more focus day.

As long as you stick to it, your day will go as planned, and you will make minimal mistakes and get more done.

9.NO DEVICE DAY WITH THE FAMILY

One most followed rule of the Amish is the restriction of communication devices in the home. Devices like cell phones, TV, and radios are considered to be distracting.

In our modern society, it’s hard to walk away from these things as they play a very important role in the way we live our lives.

By the way, a no device day doesn’t seem all that horrible. Take a day to spend time with your family, pets, and friends without the interruption of devices.

It builds close relationships and communications with those who need your attention the most. I promise you won’t regret doing it.

10.DIY FURNITURE COST LESS

The Amish homes are decorated with beautiful homemade furniture. These are wooden furniture made from scratch by the men in the family.

Making your own can be very exciting. I met a young couple who bought their equipment and made their beds, dining set, computer tables, and nightstands. These made them so proud and their home is looking very outstanding from the rest.

You may not be the pro at building furniture but I believe you can create and design your own. It doesn’t have to be a work of art. Social media is a good source for learning a skill.

11.FULL NIGHTS REST

The Amish don’t use alarm clocks to get them started in the mornings. They believe that a full night rest will get you up and running in the mornings without any extra help.

Going to bed before the next day sets in will allow the brain and body to get enough rest to function effectively the next day. This is a good practice to do every night.

12.PREP YOUR MEALS

Prepping your meals for the next day will not only get things up and running faster. This habit will contribute to your health and you becoming more organized.

Before turning in at nights lay out what you will be preparing in the morning for breakfast. When you get out of bed you will know exactly what your next move will be.

13.TIME OUT

Time out is a time you take for yourself to meditate and reflect. You don’t have to be spiritual to do this. This habit is a good way to relax the mind and destress.

Distressing the mind will make you face situations in a calm way. Taking a walk in the park or just sitting by yourself with your eyes closed for a few minutes is a good way to start.

14.CREATE A FLOWER GARDEN

Amish women not only cleans the home and make it beautiful. They actually enjoy planting flowers. Flowers are great, they set the atmosphere in your home.

Having a garden to tend to is a good habit for anyone to start. It comes with a lot of benefits that will beautify your home and your life.

15.BE YOURSELF

Amish are a group that dared to be themselves. Their lifestyle is completely opposite to that of ours. This makes them different yet comfortable with who they are.

A good habit is to love yourself. Design you’re surrounding the way you like it. Dress the way that makes you comfortable. Take yourself away from those who contradict. As long as it is healthy then you should live it as the Amish do.

A SIMPLE WAY OF LIFE

These Amish practices are not quite out of the ordinary. Most of them are similar to our lifestyle while some are not. Taking a page from the Amish book will change your life in a positive way you can never imagine. We hope that these tips were helpful. See you soon.

snippetsthrouhthewindow.com

Do you are anyone you know have this situation? Most people find it very hard to keep a clean home. Keeping your home clean is very important when you just want to relax and unwind.

If you must admit, having a messy home with things scattered on the floor, dishes for the passes two days still hanging around in the sink is not one you can relax and unwind in.

I am a working mom and I work 6 days out of a week 10 hours each day and still manage to keep my home looking immaculate at all times. Here is how I do that.

1.GOOD HABITS

Practice yourself to be ORGANIZED. Try not to place things where they don’t belong. If you use it put it back right away.

Doing this will save you the trouble of finding time to put it back. This is where it starts with you. Don’t just wait until friends are coming over or worse, the inlaws!

2.RULES IN THE HOUSE

Let everyone knows there is not a maid in the house they all need to do their part. You are not there to pick up after anyone unless they are unable to walk and have no fingers.

Asked everyone to clean up after themselves even hubby or wifey. It just doesn’t matter. Let them know the reason why the home should be clean at all times. TELL THEM THE FACTS

3.CLEAN AS YOU GO TO PREVENT CLEANING ANXIETY

Try to avoid the piling of dishes in the sink while you cook, this is to much work, after you are done to have that to do again. Wash the plates while you cook. Ask each family member to wash their plates and cups RIGHT AWAY after using them.

Wiping the stove while you cook works well. Try removing food particles that are on the floor too. You will come to realize there will be no more “who is to do the dishes” fussing in the house. This works for every room in the house.

If this is practiced, then the only job you will have is to sanitize and clean the general areas like the STOVE, COUNTERTOPS, AND FLOOR.

Don’t forget to check the GARBAGE DISPOSAL before going to bed. Not doing that can leave a stench in the morning. That’s something you must avoid If you want to have your home smelling great in the mornings.

Pour Downy Unstoppables in the garbage disposal at nights to keep it smelling refreshed. My rule that works is, if the kitchen is messy then dinner is off. IT WORKS!!

4.BATHROOM WOES!

Your bathroom doesn’t need a day by itself to clean. Yes, I am sure about that. Just like your kitchen the same clean as you go rule applies. Lay down your bathroom rules. Keep cleaning products in the bathroom. Wipe away spilled water immediately to prevent watermarks.

Check the MIRRORS, COUNTERTOP, FAUCETS, AND THE FLOOR and give them a quick wipe. Remember the floor is not a laundry basket, Wet towels carry nasty odors so take them out. Change the bin bag every night. Leave no-poo marks in the toilet or urine.

Have a roll of paper towel, a cleaning rag, or a few used dryer sheets in an area where everyone can see them. These are used to wipe as you go.

After taking a shower, you can also prevent soap scum from becoming dried up on the walls. If you have glass doors, wipe them before getting out of the shower to prevent those ugly watermarks and soap marks.

Use a bathroom cleaning product to mist the entire shower and let it remain. The next time you shower the water will remove all the scum. A faster way to do this is to keep a cleaning rag in the shower. When you are through, give the wall a quick wipe.

5.FAMILY ROOM

This is where you hang out with the family or your friends so the main goal here is to keep it cozy and clean. Have an end table for books, newspapers, or simply a place to rest or keep your comfort items.

A cute little basket will do just right and can also be a lovely decor. Place drinks and coffee cups on coasters to prevent marks on the tables.

Keep the remote at a special spot this will make it easier to find when you need it. I keep my remote on the sofa. This makes me get to it faster when my legs are too tired to walk. That’s a cheat, but I try not to add other things. Keep it to just one item if you have to.

If you have kids around, keep a toy box in the corner. There should also be a rule for this.keep your sofa free of anything that doesn’t belong. Sofas were made for butts not clothes, books, newspaper shoes, or bags. Remember to keep the floor as a floor.

6.THE BEDROOM

Did you know that a messy room can prevent you from falling asleep? This can even send you to the doctor or visiting the pharmacy for sleep aids. Try doing these things and see what happens.

Change your linens once weekly, why? While you are sleeping you sweat, and shed dead skin cells that if inhaled will affect your allergies. Here is where your organizing skills come into play.

Place everything in its own spot and keep it there. Get up half an hour earlier just to make sure you get to make your bed before leaving.

Getting home to a well-made bed can be very soothing after a hard day of work. Keep clothes, shoes, and bags in their area right away to prevent cluster. Dust as you go and this will save you the time and energy to get it done another time.

Fold your clothes neatly after washing, separating in categories, and place them in their designated area. This will help you to be more organize and having fewer clusters.

As you can see, keeping a clean home doesn’t have to be stressful. A 5 minutes routine out of each day can make your home always clean and tidy.

Remember, PRACTICE BECOMES PERFECT.

The good thing about a kitchen is that it has its own stories, tricks hacks, and tips. For some, the kitchen is a scary place to be especially if you are not a great cook and some of us are just afraid of the kitchen glitches.

Kitchen glitches as I called them are things like burning the food, food that take an hour to cook when it should only take 20 minutes.

These are only to name a few. It’s not a matter if you are a kitchen pro are just trying to do your thing, you will still need to know how to get in and out of some crazy kitchen situations.

AUNT BEV’S GENIUS KITCHEN HACKS

That’s the reason I took the time out to share a few of Aunt Bev’s food hacks with you. In this article, you will find 11 of Aunt Bev’s most common food and kitchen tricks that will make you look like a pro.

1.USE A TOMATO TO REDUCE SALT

Adding too much salt in the pot is a common mishap in the kitchen. This hack I am about to tell you about will work only for meats, sauces, and gravies.

If your dinner is tasting a little too salty, simply cut a large tomato and place it in the pot and replace the lid. Let is simmer on low heat until the tomato is dissolved.

2.MICROWAVE YOUR LEMON

To make a lemon juicier and easier to squeeze, place it in the microwave for 10 seconds. Remove, allow to cool, and proceed to extract the now overly juicy lemon.

3. STOP ONION TEARS WITH BREAD

Slicing onions is not the easiest job in the kitchen. The onion can cause your eyes to be so teary you can hardly see to continue slicing. The secret is not the eyes but the nose.

Inhaling the onion actually causes your eyes to be teary. To prevent this place a click of bread in your mouth while you slice and you will have onion tears anymore.

4.PRESSURE COOKING WITHOUT A PRESSURE COOKER

This may sound a little odd but yes, you can have your hard to cook meats done in a few minutes if you do this simple trick before cooking in a normal pot. You will not need a pressure cooker after learning this.

After cutting your meat into your desired pieces. Soak in 2 tbsp white vinegar to your desired water for 10 minutes. Remove and rinse with cold water, seasoned, and get to cooking. BE WARNED! The meat will be extremely soft so keep checking on the texture.

5. WHY YOU SHOULD KEEP A CUT ONION IN THE FRIDGE

As you know there are bacteria floating around in your fridge. This is so because of the various types of foods being stored in it.

Secondly, your fridge is always closed and always moist which can cause bacteria from one contaminated food to pass on to the other. Keeping a cut onion in the fridge will absorb all that bad bacteria. CHANGE TWICE WEEKLY.

6.CORRECT BURNT RICE WITH BREAD

What to do if your rice is badly burnt? The smell of burnt rice is not appetizing at all. That’s something you might not want to put on yours and most certainly someone else’s plate, but what if you have to. Here is how to solve that problem.

Remove the pot from the heat. DO NOT STIR !!! place 2 slices of white bread on the top of the rice. Cover with aluminum foil for 5-10 minutes. Your rice will be smelling much better than it did before.

7. STOP OVERFLOWING POTS

Can anyone tell me why pots have to overflow, causing a huge mess on the stove? Well, I guess I have to figure that one out on my own. Here is my solution that works.

Place a wooden spoon on the top of the pot to prevent overflowing. EXTRA TIPS: Tilting the lid will work just fine also pouring a little cooking oil in the pot will prevent the overflows.

8.ANNOYING PLASTIC WRAPS

We all know how ripping off a piece of plastic wrap can be difficult. The technicalities in doing so seem to require a university degree in removing plastic wrap easily and evenly.

However, here is a genius way to do it. Place your plastic wrap in the freezer a few minutes before using it and you are ready to roll.

9.SEASONED YOUR IRON SKILLET

To make your meals taste really delicious, seasoning the meal is not the only thing that can do that. Your pot can add flavor to your meals too.

Keep your skillets seasoned by scrubbing them with salt instead of dish soap and they will add flavor to all your meals, This works well with hamlets eggs, meats, and stews just as well.

10.MILK AS KITCHEN FIRST AID

Cooking means that in some way or the other there will be accidents and you may get a burn at some point in time. If this should happen, rush to the refrigerator and grab hold of the milk,  preferably condensed milk as it is heavier and will make a better mask.

Pour the milk directly onto the burn and gently rub it on the area. The milk will act as a cover and soothing agent. Preventing the burn from doing any further damages.

TEA BAGS FOR FLAVOR

Your tea bags are more than making a soothing tea. Teabags are great for flavoring that stew for dinner. Dropping a tea bag into your stew just at the end of cooking it will enhance the flavor making the stew one that keeps you wanting more.

I was inspired by my boredom to get up and write this article, but only because I have found a way to deal with the whole issue of not having to be able to go about my usual daily duties.

Being stuck at home has its negatives and its positives. The negative is for those who are Closter phobic, meaning, unable to be in an enclosed place or small place for a long period.

This can lead to a panic attack where you feel as if you are about to stop breathing, depression can kick in. Even though you had no symptoms before.

In a locked up situation, this can become a condition to deal with, and as you know depression comes with a lot of other friends, like excessive smoking and alcohol consumption which lead to other conditions.

Now, the good thing about being at home, family time, time to think about you, creating great relationships, bonding with your pets.

Taking care of the plants and simply fixing what was wrong. Finding everyday activities to do will remove all the bad things I mentioned earlier.

Out with the NEGATIVES and in with the POSITIVES. Listed below are some great ways you can have fun while at home. Ideas that are sure to make it a pleasurable. REMEMBER TO HAVE PLANS FOR THE PETS TOO.

PLANS FOR THE DAY

PLAN YOUR DAY…Make a daily schedule. Make a list of things you will get done, make sure to write it on a note paper and stick it to the fridge. That way everyone can see it. You can even add a list of chores for each family member right there on the list.

MAKE A LIST

Every morning everyone should check the list to see what their day should be looking like. Make it fun, have the kids help with household duties, outdoor duties, have them decorate their room. this way you will get them to clean the mess out of their room.

GAMES ARE FUN

I am a lover of dominoes and card games. This a perfect activity to plan for the family GAMES NIGHT. How about a MOVIE NIGHT? this is when you all get together to watch a movie.

Have everyone write the name of their favorite movie on a small piece of paper. Toss them in a bag and give it a good shake. Have someone close their eyes and pick one from the bag.

Whatever movie pops up that’s the one. Just pray it is a good one, Have some POPCORN AND SNACKS READY. Movie night is just one great idea but you can create your own with your family. Remember to ask everyone for a suggestion this way no one is left out. HAVE FUN!!

PLAN FUN MEALS

Being bored means having good food around. This food can be healthy home-cooked meals. Create meal ideas, check out recipes on social media.

There are some good ones, especially on Pinterest. Have a  meal plan for the whole week. Have the kids give meal ideas too.

Ask for volunteers to help with dinner. Finally, EAT TOGETHER. Eating together can be around the dinner table, sitting on the floor, taking dinner outside, you can even make dinner on the grill in the back yard hmmm sounds delicious and a lot of fun.

BAKE AWAY BOREDOM

Some foods help the brain to relax. This food, I call them ” HYGGE FOODS” this word is a Danish word meaning creating comfort no matter where you are or your situation. I have benefited a lot from learning about this.

Create sweet treats like cookie, cupcakes, muffins, pies. Bake one of these for the week or maybe do two. Learn to make homemade chocolates they are quite easy to make and just as tasty. Sit in a quiet place that’s your favorite area and munch. This will help you to relax.

CLEAN WITH MUSIC

Music can control your mood. Fast beats make you go fast while slow music slows you down and helps with focus and meditation. Being at home means more cleaning duties.

This can be fun. Put on your favorite music if it is fast then you can go ahead and shaking what your mother gave to you while cleaning.

If you like it slow, then put on your earphones and wipe and dust to the slow motion of the rhythm.  I can assure you, you will be done in no time and you won’t break a sweat.

REDECORATE

Make your home brand new without spending a dime. Changing your surroundings is a great way to refresh your mind.

Seeing the same familiar things every day in the same spot for the past year can make you feel like ‘whatever’ shift them around, create a place at the window just for you.

Move the tv to a different angle, move the bed, how about the dining set, the bedroom is a must, make your bed just like they do at a hotel, place magazines in your bathroom, and on side tables.

Make your air-fresheners with scented oils. These are cheap and can be purchased online.

CREATE OR BUY SOMETHING NEW

This may sound like breaking your pocket trying to find activities to do. Factually speaking, shopping is a great way to relieve stress. It all boils down to how much of it you do, and how much you spend.

Buying the simplest of things such as a PJ or a doormat can put a smile on your face and give you a sense of newness. Creating something to use in the home works wonders just as well.

Try a pen holder, use ice trays to make or create something, learn how to crochet a table mat. I  crochet a covering for my computer chair and believe me I am no artist. I know you can think of something you too can create.

TAKE A BREAK WITH NATURE

Being in a situation where there is no fresh air, no sound from nature’s voice, can cause serious psychological problems.

Our body was made to socialized with nature. Without having some form of God’s natural gifts around us can take away the sense of living.

Air-conditioners are great, but fresh air refreshes your thoughts. The whistling of the trees, the sound of water drops, the melodious singing of the birds, Just take a moment to sit outside, no phone, tablet, or computer.

Take an hour at the earliest of the morning when everyone is still in dreamland. Have a talk with the flowers, the birds, and the trees.

MOVE THOSE LIMBS

Exercise as we all know is good for you. When you are at home you can lose focus on your health. Remember exercise activates the minds, de-stress your entire body, this helps with blood flow, and most of all, weight loss or just simply maintaining your weight. Whatever the reasons is, it is good for you.

There are many ways for you to exercise, aerobics, weights, yoga, running, skipping the best of all dance. If you are like me who likes to change my physical activities then DANCING is what you should be doing. Put on your dancing shoes, hit that play button, and shake that booty.

LAUGH YOUR HATS OFF

Laughing relaxes the muscles in your face. Did you know that it takes more muscles to frown than it takes to laugh or smile? Its possibles that life can give you nothing to laugh about, but there is always something to smile about.

MAKE FUN OF YOURSELF WHEN YOU SAY OR DO SOMETHING STUPID. Watch a funny program,  read funny articles. Make jokes with friends and family.

FORGET ABOUT THE WORLD FOR A MINUTE AND LAUGH YOUR HATS OFF WITH THIS LITTLE TALE…

There was once a farmer who just got his first cell phone. He had no one to call so he kept calling customer service until they stopped answering.

He went to visit a friend, telling him of his plight. Jokingly, he said to him, well sir, maybe your phone has a cold.

He was concerned about hearing about his phone having a cold. Knowing his friend’s expertise in this area. He asked if there was any medicine that could help.

He said yes, maybe some cold medicine he asked pleadingly, can I have some. His friend handed him the bottle waiting to see if this was really going to happen.

To his surprise, he poured the medicine on the phone. The friend was so overwhelmed, he fell to the ground, tears running out of his eyes.

He was laughing so hard they had to give me a glass of water to cool him down. Guess what? The clueless man never heard from customer service again, as the phone died of a cold.
