How to Clean Stainless Steel Appliances with Flour

If you think flour is just for cooking, think again! This one might sound the strangest of all: flour can clean stainless steel. If you’ve got dull appliances that never look shiny no matter what you use, this hack will surprise you. Flour gently polishes stainless steel and leaves it sparkling without chemicals.

I love anything that says “odd” and “different,” and these days, you’d better bring out your hidden scientist and come up with clever ways to get things done.

Cleaning is just one of my experiments, finding new frugal ways to avoid buying those pricey cleaners I saw in Walmart. Oh boy! Have you seen them? What’s funny is that there are products you already have in your home that can get the job done even better.

I am getting real these days. My stainless steel appliances are speaking out with their glow since I started buffing them with flour and new cleaning methods.

I have a lineup of these stainless steel appliance cleaning tips somewhere on here, so check them out.

Why Flour Works

  • Acts as a gentle abrasive that polishes metal

  • Absorbs oils and grime without scratching

  • Leaves surfaces smooth and fingerprint-resistant

Won’t it cause a Mess?

Only if you get it wet, if you forget to cover the floor where the appliance is located.

Supplies You’ll Need

  • All-purpose flour (yes, from your pantry)

  • Microfiber cloths

  • Dish soap and warm water for cleaning first

How to Clean Stainless Steel Appliances with Flour:

Step 1: Wash and Dry

Clean the appliance with warm, soapy water and dry it completely. This step is crucial—flour and water together make a paste, which you don’t want.

Tips: Flour cakes, so make sure the appliance is completely dry before buffing with the flour. I would advise covering the floor with a sheet of newspaper or anything that will prevent a mess from giving you extra work. To be sure the appliance is fully dry, wait around 1o minutes after cleaning with soap and water before buffing with the flour.

Step 2: Sprinkle Flour

  • Lightly sprinkle flour over the stainless steel surface.

  • Use a dry microfiber cloth to rub it in, following the grain.

Step 3: Buff Until Shiny

  • Continue rubbing until the flour picks up grime and polishes the steel.

  • Wipe away all residue with a fresh cloth.

Tip:

This method works best on dry, non-greasy surfaces. It’s especially great for polishing sinks and oven doors.

You can use this tip on any stainless steel items you have in your home, not only appliances. This is a simple, low-cost, but genius way that I keep my stainless steel appliances looking amazing all the time. If you want to stay away from harsh cleaners like commercial stainless steel cleaners, then you should go for a pack of flour. Haha! That sounds crazy, but it works and is frugal too. Love it!

Conclusion

Flour isn’t just for baking—it’s a secret stainless steel polisher that leaves your appliances gleaming. It may sound odd, but once you see the results, you’ll keep a bag handy not just for cookies but for cleaning too.
